I am the son of Jackie Stephens of Lilburn, Georgia and James Beck of Orange Park, Florida. I have two step-parents as well - Doug Stephens and Sheryl Beck. Unlike Alicia, I am definitely not an "only child" – with SEVEN siblings life has always been…eventful. After all, not every family can play basketball with 2 teams of 5...and as my family will testify, I was on the winning team most of the time (either that or my memory is slightly skewed)!
For those of you who do not know my background, I was born in Georgia. Shortly thereafter, my family moved to Texas. While living in Texas, I got my first dose of Michigan when my dad took me to a Rangers-Tigers game. Like the REBEL that I am, I rooted for the Tigers (even bought a Tigers baseball cap at the game).
At age 5, I got my second dose of Michigan when we moved here. Approximately one year later we moved back to Georgia. However, my love for Michigan never faded - whether it was going to Michigan basketball games, or watching the Lions lose to the Packers in the playoffs (back when they still had Barry Sanders)
Of course, how can we forget Michigan FOOTBALL? Their unbelievable losing streak to PAC 10 teams... until 1997 when they beat Washington. (Good thing Nebraska cried and threw a tantrum to split the National Title.)
With my love for Michigan, one would be surprised to hear that I did not go to college there. Instead, I went to Georgia Tech – where I decorated my apartment in Michigan colors!
After 5 years (and a Masters Degree in Computer Graphics and Computer Languages), I realized that I DID NOT want a job in computer graphics. So like everyone else who has “no clue” what job they want, I decided to become a consultant – developing and installing utility accounting software. The joy of this type of job is the opportunity to travel. Since I started working at PowerPlan Consultants on January 12, 2005 I have been able to travel to Houston and Dallas, TX; Albuquerque, NM; King of Prussia, PA, Baltimore, MD; and Jackson, MI for work related activities.
Outside of work, I have also been blessed with the opportunity to travel: Flying to San Diego, CA (for the sole sake of going to a “Chargers vs. Dolphins” football game); going golfing in Alaska (where I ended up meeting wonderful people who also invited me to a small BBQ at their home); traveling to Hawaii on multiple occasions with my family (Grant, Julia, Cecelia… I know that you think I am wonderful), and visiting Maine to visit family.
Through the course of traveling, I finally met the perfect girl for me – the girl of my dreams – a MICHIGAN girl...
